With a passion to teach and make a difference, Neil Wilson began volunteering as a Reading Helper in 2014. An Executive Manager of an airline, Neil dedicates time in his week to support six learners at Roseneath Primary to learn to read. “I have found all of these learners to be really eager and interested in their schooling”, he explained. “All six children have presented significant difficulties with basic letter sounds and phonics, so a “back to basics” approach has worked well in my experience.”
Over the past three years, Neil has learnt a few tips and tricks to make learning to read fun and exciting for his pupils. “The learners all love to be recognised for a job well done and they thrive on a bit of competition, so exercises or games where they can be given praise and compete for scores or credits tend to work really well”, he explained. Using a variety of media has also helped pique their interest, according to Neil. “Accessing multimedia during lessons is something I have focused on (a trusty iPad is a very useful aid) and I have seen that this is hugely appreciated and very informative for the kids who typically don’t have access to “Googling” a concept or interest they may have.”
Building positive relationships with his learners has been an impactful experience for Neil. “Sometimes the learners just need a space to talk to someone they trust about significant things in their life, whether positive or negative, and this is a special responsibility of being a Reading Helper and something I find very rewarding.”
Considering becoming a Reading Helper? Neil shared his reasons why you definitely should sign up. “You will make a real difference to young people who are so eager to learn and who are such unique and special characters – you will very quickly realize just how much your contribution is needed and valued by the children you work with and their respective families.”
