Nokuthula Lucia Hobyani (26) started as a Literacy Tutor at Help2read in 2022, learning in detail about the community-based organization and she was motivated to boost literacy among young kids and empowering the community with tools to help double the number of kids’ success in reading. She knew she could make time to play a tiny role by becoming a Literacy Tutor.
She didn’t realize the full scope and urgency of this issue in the communities and why it is such an important milestone. As she volunteered, the more she wanted to get involved and help nurture young minds. “This became a unique opportunity to give a helping hand, connect with kids, help them improve their skills through methods that have been carefully researched and fine-tuned, making it possible for everyone to enjoy reading”. It’s been an extremely rewarding experience for her. When she thinks about her own childhood, she realizes some of her happiest memories involved books and storytelling.
Books offered a perfect way to escape into another world according to her, words play an important role in her life and not just because she loves reading.
This opportunity helped her turn children’s vision into progress. “Our community, our children, our future depend on us,” she said. “Reading together offers such a sweet time for bonding, asking questions and discovery”. She now realizes that we can all make a difference through literacy, thanks to Help2read.
