Students cycle for 11 days, raising R25,000 for help2read
2 June, 2017
In December, a group of UCT and Stellenbosch students cycled from Cape Town to Keurboom, near Plettenberg Bay, to raise funds for help2read. The group of 13 students cycled for 11 days during their varsity vacation, raising R25,000 for help2read.
Robert Rorich, a 2nd year Engineering student at the University of Cape Town, and his sister, Michelle, came up with the fundraising idea and rounded up their close friends to join them.
The funds raised have been used to help fund programmes at five schools where help2read provides one-on-one reading support to learners, impacting over 300 learners.
Our Literacy Tutor Programme at Mbekweni and Wemmershoek Primary in the Western Cape are two of the five schools that have benefited from the remarkable fundraising efforts of the cyclists. Their donation also contributed towards making the reading spaces brighter and more learner friendly.
