Meet the learners behind the coffee sleeve designs
Ammaarah of Portia Primary School
“Reading makes me feel special”
When I was introduced to Ammaarah, she was extremely shy. I was excited to watch her develop an enthusiasm towards reading. During the year that I assisted her, Ammaarah did a lot of exploring, playing and learning. Her vocabulary started to expand, as well as her ability to retain information.
Ammaarah loves to draw, and we included art as much as we could in her reading sessions. The results were pretty amazing. Ammaarah has benefitted from the help2read programme and still holds my “Most Improved Second Grader Award”. She holds a very special place in my heart.

Chelsea of Groote Schuur Primary School
“Reading makes me clever”
Chelsea joined the help2read programme in January 2016. She is a friendly young lady with outstanding manners, always willing to lend a helping hand to her teachers and peers. She always tries her best in everything she does. Chelsea always has a smile on her face and her positive attitude is admirable. Since Chelsea has joined the programme, I have seen an improvement in her attitude towards reading.
– Ms van Veuren, teacher at Groote Schuur Primary School
Jared of St Annes Primary School
“Reading makes me feel super!”
Jared struggled a great deal with reading, spelling and sentence construction. He lacked confidence and refused to participate in any class activities that required him to read.
After two years of being assisted by the help2read volunteers, Jared had really developed and was eager to participate. His attitudes towards his schoolwork also changed and he became more positive and a lot more confident.
– Mrs Fisher, Principal
Charl of Sullivan School
“Reading makes me proud of myself”
Charl started the reading programme in February 2014 and was a Grade 3 learner. In the beginning, Charl’s reading was weak and very slow. He was unable to recognise sight words and his fluency required a lot of attention. Even though he struggled to read, he was very eager to learn and always looked forward to his sessions.
In 2015, Charl’s teacher told me that he had improved tremendously in his reading and had gained so much confidence. He started reading independently and with confidence, and graduated from the program at the end of 2015. It’s been a pleasure assisting him with his reading and having him on the program. I am very proud of this young boy.
– Badroenessa Thebus, Volunteer Reading Helper
Asenathi of Boston Primary
“Reading makes me learn and happy”
Asenathi is a keen learner and loved his reading sessions in 2015 when he was in Grade 3. He enjoyed reading ‘On the moon’, ‘A Journey’, and ‘Lula and Lebo’ with both English and isiXhosa text. His handwriting is beautiful and he was the ‘Most improved learner’ in his class at the end of the year. He also loved playing games and drawing.
