2019 Virgin Money London Marathon – Meet the help2read #TeamLiteracy Champions
29 January, 2019
help2read was gifted with two charity ballot entries in the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon. We are excited to announce the two special and committed runners who have taken on the mission of unlocking the hearts and wallets of sponsors to achieve the charity goal of at least £1,750 as our Literacy Champions in the Virgin Money London Marathon taking place on 28 April 2019.
The funds raised by #TeamLiteracy will go towards the Volunteer Reading helper and Community Literacy Tutor programmes where one-on-reading support is being provided to children at help2read partner primary schools in South Africa.
In addition, the funds will also enable help2read to ensure that the reading spaces are inviting and that resource boxes are stocked with exciting age-appropriate storybooks and games.
Cathy Scott
Cathy has a huge passion for reading, it is no surprise then, that she works in linguistics and publishing, because she believes in the value of sharing knowledge through the written word.
“I remember vividly how much reading changed my life when I was at school, and I’m thrilled to be raising money for a charity that brings literacy resources and skills to disadvantaged children. The ability to read and write can not only change an individual’s life but also give them the tools they need to make a meaningful contribution to society and lift communities out of entrenched poverty.
She has been running 5k, 10k and 1/2 marathon distances for a few years now, and is eager to take on the challenge of the full 26.2 miles, in this iconic race
Cathy is currently 43% closer to reaching her target having raised a total of £700.50. To help Cathy reach her target, donate your contribution via her fundraising page here https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CathyScott
Stephanie Cantor
During Stephanie’s visit to South Africa in 2018, she had the opportunity to spend time with the team and witness the work first-hand giving her a deeper appreciation of our programme and an in-depth understanding of the literacy crisis in South Africa among our primary school children and our programmes aimed at providing literacy skills to children and job readiness support to our tutors.
This motivated her to finally sign up for the marathon; she has had the intention to run the Virgin Money London Marathon since moving to London in 2017 and the opportunity to run as a Literacy Champion was all the motivation she needed. Please help her to support our work by donating on via her fundraising page https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/StephanieCantor1
On behalf of all the learners, Reading Helpers and Community Literacy Tutors; we would like to thank all the supporters who have enabled our runners to raise funds thus far. We would like to invite our South African and international supporters to come on board in support of both Cathy and Stephanie to successfully to reach their target of £1.750, by giving through this link for Cathy, and this link for Stephanie, by the 28th of April.
