Visit from Susan Belgrave
24 February, 2014
From L-R: Susan Belgrave, originator of help2read method; Dee Cawcutt, Principle of Wynberg Girls’ Junior School and former principle of Muizenberg Junior School which was the first to implement the help2read method; and Alex Moss, founder of help2read.
Although help2read began in South Africa in 2005, the concept originated from Volunteer Reading Help (nowBeanstalk) which was founded in the UK in 1973.
Susan Belgrave, a former teacher, created Volunteer Reading Help after she recognised the need for individualised tutoring in North Kensington primary schools. Many years and many successes down the line, Alex Moss began volunteering with VRH. After travelling to South Africa he realised the method could also do good in Mzansi. In 2005, using the VRH method, Alex Moss founded help2read which then began as a pilot at Muizenberg Junior School in the Western Cape.
The help2read staff recently received a visit from Susan Belgrave. It was an inspiring experience in which she related to the team stories of patience, triumph and success. Thank you, Susan, for making the trip.
