Volunteer of the Month – Shehaam Harris
18 June, 2014
Shehaam, with the beautifully painted room behind her.
Shehaam has been an active participant at the help2read programme at Strandfontein Primary for the past four years (that’s over 250 hours of volunteering!). To call her a participant is actually misleading as she has actively led the project and been instrumental in its success. She takes it upon herself to rally her fellow volunteers and goes out of her way to see that they are motivated. When we visited Shehaam, she said she had cupcakes baking at home for the upcoming end-of-term meeting which all the Strandfontein volunteers were attending later that day.
Shehaam lobbied the school to allocate a new room to help2read so that the learners could have a more quiet space to do their sessions. She then organised her fellow volunteers to revamp the room which is now a stunning, playful shade of green. Despite all her efforts, Shehaam was quick to remind us that she could not have done it without the other volunteers.
Shehaam began volunteering because she knew that most children at Strandfontein Primary did not have the same level of support at home that her own children receive. Help2read is grateful to have such a dedicated person on board!
Thank you, Shehaam, for everything you do.
